The Art and Science of Consultancy: Diversity of Practice, Unity of Purpose

What we learn from this year's ABP Awards finalists in the "Best Business Psychology Supplier of The Year" category

The entries for Best Business Psychology Supplier of the Year this year illustrate something both simple and profound: that great consultants share a common foundation of evidence, ethics, and curiosity, but express it through an extraordinary diversity of methods, markets, and impact.

Business psychology consultancies and suppliers operate across a huge diversity of environments: from healthcare to hospitality, defence to digital, government to global enterprise. The range of submissions demonstrated that there is no single way to practise good consultancy, yet but there is a shared professional standard that distinguishes excellence. Whether the project focused on leadership, assessment, inclusion, wellbeing, or organisational change, the same hallmarks of quality could be seen throughout: psychological rigour, practical relevance, and genuine human impact.

Some entrants showcased the scientific backbone of the profession. They are developing validated tools, refining psychometrics, and applying data science and behavioural analytics to strengthen how organisations make decisions about people. Their work brings transparency, fairness, and precision to selection, development, and engagement, ensuring that psychology remains both credible and current in an age of rapid technological change.

Others exemplified applied consulting mastery, embedding psychological insight directly into business systems. They are helping clients redesign recruitment journeys to be more inclusive, improve employee wellbeing through behaviourally informed interventions, and shape cultures built on trust and connection. They use frameworks such as the ABP Consulting Cycle, COM-B, and the Job Demands–Resources model not as theory to be quoted, but as lenses through which real problems are solved.

The judges were struck by the breadth of innovation represented. Some suppliers are working at system level, influencing policy, strategy, and leadership culture across entire sectors. Others are working at the micro level, supporting individuals and teams to build resilience, motivation, and psychological safety. Each demonstrates that psychology’s impact is scalable, from the personal to the societal.

Equally important is the diversity of organisational form represented. Among the finalists are specialist boutiques, global enterprises, research-led start-ups, and social-impact organisations. Each applies psychology differently, yet all uphold the same principles of evidence-based practice, ethical responsibility, and measurable results. This diversity strengthens the field: it shows that business psychology can adapt to different needs and contexts while maintaining professional integrity.

What unites these consultancies is their commitment to partnership. The best consultants don’t just deliver products, they build capability. They work with clients, not merely for them, creating co-owned solutions that endure long after a project ends. Their work reflects the ABP’s emphasis on improving working lives, not only through outcomes, but through the relationships, learning, and legacy they create along the way.

Ultimately, this year’s entries demonstrate that business psychology consultancy is both an art and a science. The science ensures that what we do is valid, ethical, and effective. The art lies in translating that science into meaningful change for people and organisations. The strength of our profession lies in this diversity of expression, united by a single purpose: to use psychological insight to make work more effective, fair, and fulfilling for everyone.

Congratulations to all this year's finalists!
